4/5/2016 0 Comments St Ives, Cornwall - TurnstonesI knew there were Turnstones, that were considered somewhat tame, residing by the coast in Cornwall but I was yet to discover where exactly they were and just how tame they were. I was therefore very surprised to find a good population of Turnstone not only feeding on the beaches for insects and crustaceans as is typical of the species but also feeding on scraps at people's feet along with the gulls and pigeons on the harbour side in St Ives. A few years ago I spent hours lying in wait in the pouring rain in the Scottish highlands for just one bird - instead I found I was greeted with over 20 birds merely metres away from me. It was a great opportunity to keep a comfortable distance to allow the birds to get on with their lives and yet to be close enough to capture images using only a 200mm lens.
